The lodger has just hung up the phone after declining an offer to subscribe a newspaper. He is only the lodger after all. After that, the lodger does some small talk with his landlady, about preparing buttermilk with grapefruit instead of lemon, about the dog,about whether or not a bar of soap has been placed in the shower stall, the lot. On the other hand, it looks as if there is a strong mutual attraction between them but it remains unexpressed, not to say repressed.
