The miserly wife precisely divides the money for necessary expenses into cans intended for this purpose and counts her husband's cigarettes as well. And then the couple receive a letter from a supposed great-uncle they have never heard of. He promises them that they will inherit thirty thousand dollars upon his death. The couple subscribes to the local newspaper to get the news of their uncle's death, as it would be tactless to contact the uncle directly. And they begin to do the math.
