Back at the jail, Steve berates himself for failing to see the severity of Carolee's condition. Carolee's condition is diagnosed as couvelaire uterus. The placenta has begun to separate, causing bleeding into the peritoneal cavity and possible rupture of the uterus. Maggie takes Toni to the Allison home to stay with Billy, and collect Emma. Emma becomes upset since she had promised to be with Carolee throughout the whole childbirth process. Back in surgery, Carolee's daughter is delivered, but a weakened Carolee is still in danger.
