Realizing that Cathy has a campaign in mind with her comments about fatherhood, Nick lectures her that he can't be tamed or domesticated. Adam Reynolds, who is a college friend of DA Harrigan, stops by his office in hopes that Steve's case won't go to the grand jury, but Harrigan is convinced that Steve's guilty. He suggests that Reynolds save his presentation for the jury because he won't stop it from going to trial. Nick convinces himself that he shouldn't consider John when it's Althea who needs his help with Edna. He recalls last New Years Eve when they resolved to be friends again and decides that based on that, he has a right to help her. Matt explains to Jason the threat Dan made to go to the hospital board against Steve and Carolee. He advises Jason that Steve won't change his mind unless Jason can find a way to convince him that Carolee won't be hurt.
