Nowhere was this anger expressed more freely than in the birthplace of Western democracy. Strikes and demonstrations are not unusual in Greece, almost every week there is industrial action by one sector or another, but there had been nothing on this scale since the toppling of the military dictatorship 35 years ago. On May 5th, As Greek MPs debated the next round of cuts, workers stormed the parliament, buildings were set on fire and three people were burned to death, a tragedy which caught the attention of the global media.
