Banasur grew great and powerful with a boon from Lord Shiva that he could not be defeated by any outside enemy, and conquered the neighboring kingdoms and torturing his Vaishnav subjects and converting them forcibly into Shaivites. Amidst this torturous rule, the marriage problem of his daughter Usha beset Banasur and the fear of his daughter marrying a Vaishnav instilled in him through a premonition in his dream, which subsequently compelled him to take steps of imprisoning his daughter in a place so that she would give up the idea of marriage. By a twist of fate, while Usha tries to find a solution for a peaceful rule of her dreaded father she falls in love with Anirudh, the grandson of Lord Krishna who appears to her in a dream. Usha's friend Chitralekha helps her to fulfill the dream, by secretly kidnapping the prince Anirudh from Dwaraka while he is asleep, and bringing him to her palace along with his cot. The great Narad Muni officiated the wedding. On learning the marriage of his daughter, Banasur gets very wild and rushes to the palace and fights with Anurudh and binds him with his "Sarpa Astra". In the meanwhile the Vaishnav subjects leave the town and proceed to Dwaraka and narrate the whole atrocities committed on them by Banasur. The news of kidnapping of Anirudh, his marriage with Usha and the subsequent binding of the Sarpa Astra on him enrages Lord Krishna and he decides to wage war with Banasur. Narad, by his machinations on both sides, gets the two armies of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva ready to battle each other. Written by Anonymous See less
