In an alpine city in Schwaben (southern Wurtemberg), council member and leading merchant Eckhardt Willinger fears a illness may be fatal and asks his son Otfried to save his soul by posthumously bringing his heart in pilgrimage to Copostella to atone for a lowlife's death by greedy neglect. Appalled that not he but his future brother in law is to inherit father's position, Otfried asphyxiates Eckhart and agrees a double marriage for him and his sister with another council member and his daughter, including a secret, illegal league with mighty neighbor Bavaria. Instead of obeying her new guardian, sister Tilla flees, taking father's heart of the pilgrimage with a bunch of losers lead by dodgy 'father' Thomas. Her noble fiancé set out to rescue her, the sinister husband to be's bastard to end her escape either way. the perilous journey would have been fatal for all pilgrims at brigands' hands without the gallant intervention of a one-armed warrior, the protector of French lady Felicia de Béarn.
