Into self-sufficiency she is home educating them and aims to have her own water supply by buying a huge rain barrel but it gets stuck in the wall. Eldest daughter Germaine is smitten by local bad boy Lee Rind, even though he is meant to have shot a snail with an air rifle, and has built a shrine to him. Sensible next eldest Aretha is practical and politically aware but they both bicker over who should mow the lawn. They get a visit from pot-smoking Grampy, fleeing an argument with his wife whom he calls Dr No. After taking the kids out in his car to collect his stash, he stays the night and is very smelly.
