Born in rural Virginia, Allen grew up in the North before returning to his home state in the segregated South in 1952 to earn legendary status as a teacher, coach and positive role. The story is told through interviews with the 92-year old Allen and the colleagues and students he inspired. His travails through the public schools of Englewood, New Jersey, at Hampton Institute and NYU - and a stint in a racist World War II military - form the backdrop of this inspiring story of African-American education, dedication, sacrifice and accomplishment.
