Exit Strategy is adapted from a scene in Shakespeare's play Troilus and Cressida, transposed to a present-day environment. The setting is a Council of War held by the Trojan military leadership. An opportunity arises for them to extract themselves from the bloody, years-long war which has claimed thousands of lives, but to do so would mean sacrificing honour, losing face. The film gestures to parallels with contemporary conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as the Trojan Prince Hector reluctantly agrees to reject the offer of peace and continue the war, ultimately condemning Troy to defeat and downfall.
