Hugh is eager to be put to some use, but after taking on an advertising job his mother has arranged for him, he realizes that not only are they uninterested in what he has to offer, but that everyday life holds no meaning for him. The only thing that gave him purpose was flying in the RAF, so he decides to reapply to fight in the war. Marjorie is horrified, but the reality of it all is brought home when Hugh meets up with old colleague Julian, who informs him that he and Hugh are the only remaining original members of their squadron.
