He feels that his diminutive associate, Jeff, is a hindrance, so he strolls out alone. But Jeff refuses to stay home. He spruces up a bit and, ere Mutt gains the corner, Jeff is out promenading on the shady side of a shady street. A pocketbook, lying peacefully on the sidewalk, halts Mutt, whose first impulse is to pick up the innocent looking leather thing. No, it's a trick, and Mutt cannot be tricked by a trick as old as Methuselah. Let Jeff do it! Jeff waddles down the street until the pocketbook is reached. Mutt, from behind a convenient corner, watched the proceedings. Jeff yields to temptation and the abandoned pocketbook is soon in his custody. Mutt and Jeff rejoice over the finding, and, as they are both thirsty, Jeff is only to happy to have a smile with his tall friend. They enter a palace of the swinging doors; they order a cooling draught; Jeff nonchalantly throws a half dollar on the counter; they start to lift their respective elbows. The coin is bad and the bartender knows it. Bing! At the rate of a thousand miles a minute, the long and the short of it exit through the swinging doors and fall affectionately upon the unyielding and hot pavement. Back to their stuffy, little room, Mutt is far from being cool and collected, and impatiently awaits the return of his wandering companion. A presentiment of evil keeps poor little Jeff away from his domicile, but at last he is obliged to put in an appearance. He does, and Mutt does the rest. Written by
