At the age of twenty-four, his boyhood desire instead of diminishing had increased to such a stage that he at last decided to leave England and enter upon a romantic career in "the States." Accordingly, he gathered together a tremendous assortment of guns, revolvers, sombreros, monocles and other essentials of the rugged western life, and set sail. On the boat, he met May Brownson returning with her family from a summer in Europe. May liked the young Englishman immediately, and succeeded in persuading him to accept the cordial invitation of her father to spend a month at the Brownson's summer camp. The Brownson's camp was in the woods and Ashton, immediately after his arrival began to cast wistful eyes about for the grizzlies and Indians his heart desired. May Brownson learned of her guest's adventurous cravings and decided to arrange a little Wild West show for his benefit. Her brother was secretly dispatched to the city for costumes and on his return, the guests garbed themselves in the habiliments of Indians of the most ferocious order. To Ashton, gaily conversing with a couple of guests, the alarming news was suddenly brought that May had been carried off by a band of Indians, and that she was to be burned at the stake at sunset. Ashton immediately retired to the house, garbed himself in his cowboy outfit and went in pursuit of the savage redskins, accompanied by several of the men guests, who begged him to take the lead in their daring venture. Arrived at the Indian camp, Ashton gallantly charging forward was treacherously deserted by his perfidious allies, raptured by the ferocious savages and condemned to share May's fate. The young Englishman managed to slip out of his bonds, and engaged in a terrific fight with his captors. The tight terminated suddenly when Ashton knocked the feathers and wig off one of the Indians and recognized a fellow guest. Naturally enough, he was quite indignant until May asked him to forgive them. Then he decided that even if American humor was in very bad taste. American girls were pretty enough to make up for it.
