Consultation with his wife results in the decision that the only remedy to avoid ruin is to find a rich husband for their daughter, Lena, and inveigle him into buying a half interest in the pickle factory. Lena protests but when she sees father's bank book showing a cash balance of $1,000, she approves of the plan. Father agrees to place Lena on exhibition as the daughter of the "Peerless Pickle King," hoping to attract the desired rich husband. They finally become established in sumptuous quarters in Atlantic City. Conspicuous among the guests of the hotel is Elliott Leffingwell, who poses as owner of vast diamond fields in South Africa, but who is merely a fortune hunter there on the same mission as Lena. Attracted at once by Lena's striking appearance, he immediately lays plans to annex himself to the old man's money. A dance at the hotel that night brings about the meeting. Father, fooled by Elliott's appearance and talk, thinks he has landed the object of his search, so does all in his power to hasten the match. But the pace finally becomes too speedy for father, his money giving out, so he suddenly returns with his flock to their city home. Elliott follows. One night Elliott decides that the time is ripe to test his chances of separating father from some of his coin so decides to sell him an interest in his business for the paltry sum of $10,000, and by a strange coincidence, father has devised the same scheme at the same time and for the same amount of money. They meet at father's office. Father boasts that he has just received an order for a million pickles. Elliott, not to be outdone, boasts that he has just filled an order for a million diamonds. Father, awed by Elliott's bluff, hurriedly signs a check for Elliott, expecting his money in return but Elliott assures him he will settle his obligation as soon as the steamer arrives bringing his draft from London. Father is suspicious after Elliott leaves, calls up his bank to ask them to "swing"' the amount, but the president angrily upbraids him. Finding the check "N.G." Elliott returns and threatens father with violence for trying to cheat him. Lena, meanwhile, having called at the office tries to pacify Elliott. Father shows him a bona fide large order he has just received, promises to make good, and tells him to take Lena as security. He then asks Elliott for his money. Elliott replies, "The steamer has been sunk by a German submarine." Father, glad to lose his money for the German cause, promises Elliott a half interest in his business for a wedding present, and tells him he may perhaps make a good pickle salesman.
