Next the tug of war (rope-pulling between the sections) and fatigues (boring chores like sweeping leaves). Mail is a boost for most, grievous for Kyp as his parents write he hard truth. Next a day and night exercise with real guns with blanks and field shovels to dig in after a march and camp till the objective: a dawn assault on a bridge, after Chris Harkin is caught firing a shot -strictly forbidden, at close distance even blanks are very dangerous- and lying about it; the attack is lots of boyish fun, even explosives, actually quite promising for once. While the rest sleeps a few hours, Harkin has to dig rocks from a hill with a backpack filled with more, a good sweat. Lazy Kyp costs the mates needless bastards, it's just too much by now, ex-bouncer Ashley Morton bounces his butt out of the barracks with a head-but now the majority wants him ostracized, but Marcus Birks saves his bacon while his entire kit is thrown out by most bad lads, Birks sees he gets to the medic.
