Joseph, a Jewish man, looks out of his window and sees a Gestapo agent, accompanied by a Wehrmacht officer, getting out of a Traction-avant and heading towards his building. He understands: he is about to be arrested. He wakes up his 12-year-old daughter, Suzanne, and tells her that she must not say anything. At the time of his arrest, Joseph pretends that the girl is not his, that she is staying there with the landlady. As if in a dream, Suzanne confirms this version.
