The sailor tells Simon he jumped ship in San Francisco and a band of men have been chasing him ever since. The five men, all federal marshals, surround Simon's stagecoach and tell him that his newest passenger fled a ship that contained bubonic plague and they were authorized to kill everyone the Britisher came in contact with to prevent the diseases spread.
