Peter Blakemore is a politically well-connected judge and a supposedly brilliant author, with several published books and legal articles in his name. Emily Trudeau has served as Blakemore's clerk, long-term mistress, and right-hand-woman for a decade. Trudeau is violently murdered within Blakemore's house and her laptop is stolen by the killer. Goren soon realizes that Trudeau had ghost-written most of Blakemore's written works, that the murder was intended to undermine Blakemore's career, and that the laptop contained most of Trudeau's recent and unpublished works. A low-level criminal is arrested for the murder, but Goren and Eames find out that the guy has been working as a henchman for a judge with shady activities, called Raoul Sabatelli. Sabatelli has been a professional rival of Blakemore since their college years, he personally hates Blakemore, and he has published satirical texts about Blakemore's incompetence.
