He is wondering how he can reform his relatives when he happens to pass a store with a lovely, old-fashioned, framed motto in the window. It occurs to him this would be just the thing to bring peace to his distracted relations, so he buys it and sends it to them with a request that they hang it in a suitable place. As Uncle George has money, they don't dare refuse, but nobody wants it hung where they can see it. They won't have it in the dining room, the cook won't stand for it in the kitchen, and they finally settle on a dark corner in the parlor which is usually kept closed. So Tom gets the ladder and Jimmy gets the hammer and mother gets some nails and the cook gets the wire and they start to put up the motto. There is trouble from the start Father nearly falls off the ladder and has all kinds of trouble. The ladder falls from under him and to save his life he has to cling to the molding. He smashes his finger with the hammer and knocks down several square yards of plaster. Finally he falls off the ladder, bringing the rest of the ceiling down with him. This precipitates another family fracas which is interrupted by the arrival of Uncle George, who is so angry at the treatment given his motto, he slams it down over Wilkens' head and departs in great dudgeon.
