The widow is in love with Matt Swirl, the Master ...See moreThe widow of Sweezy, president of the Athens Uplift Society, for vanity's sake, regards her now-grown son Cutey (nicknamed "Pickles") as still a child and dresses him in Buster Brown suits. The widow is in love with Matt Swirl, the Master of Greek and Modern Dancing, and has a deadly rival in old maid Amanda Bones. Pickles is in love with Lizzie, the pretty maid-of-all work at the Sweezy home, but on learning of this the widow threatens to disinherit him if he dares disclose that he is of marriageable age. During a dress rehearsal of the play to be given by the Uplift Society, Lizzie mysteriously shows Pickles a suit of man's clothes, and confides her plan. While the classical dance is in progress, Pickles puts on the suit, and looking a very spruce young gentleman, stands in the hall, unseen, watching the dancers. Lizzie attracts Miss Bones' attention, and the spinster is amazed, on stepping into the hall, to behold the splendor of Pickles in his new clothes. The young man is flirtatious, and Miss Bones responds in kind. Pickles proposes, is accepted, and suggests they speak to Mother. Amanda gets there first, rushes up to Mrs. Sweezy, in the midst of the crowd, and flinging her arms around her neck, cries, "My dear, new mother." All is consternation for a moment, then indignant inquiries bring out the fact that Picks has "evoluted" into a full-fledged young man engaged to be married. Pickles announces that if Mrs. Sweezy won't take Lizzie for a daughter-in-law, she must take Amanda Bones. With a struggle, the widow gives her consent to Pickles' marriage to Lizzie.
