A group of farmers gathered around the ever-popular and notorious grocery store stove, snicker and cast insinuating remarks, "Aunt" Sophia Stringer, a prominent church worker of the village, takes up a collection from the men. She asks "Uncle" Hezekiah to contribute to the fund and is most emphatically denounced. Jed, Hezekiah's nephew, is in love with Susan. That afternoon Jed meets Professor Swengolly, the hypnotist, who is to give a performance at the town hall that evening. Jed earns two tickets to the show by putting up bill posters. That evening, Jed takes his sweetheart, Susan, to the show. The professor hypnotizes two or three in the audience, including Jed, and makes them go through screamingly funny antics. After the performance Jed takes the professor to one side and asks him if he will hypnotize his uncle to loosen up on some of the surplus cash. The professor and Jed steal quietly into "Uncle" Hezekiah's bedroom, and finding him asleep, wake him up and hypnotize him. The professor then tells Jed that in the morning his uncle will be a different man. The following morning Uncle Hezekiah arises. He finds Jed and his sweetheart, Susan, in the kitchen. He gives them some money and consents to their marriage. Uncle Hezekiah then goes to the grocery store and treats several of the farmers to cigars. To the surprise of everybody, he gives "Aunt" Sophia Stringer a large sum of money for her fund. "Uncle" Hezekiah then meets Miss Sarah Winkle, his wash lady, and proposes to her. She accepts him and they proceed to the church. Jed sees his uncle with Miss Winkle and rushes madly to the railroad station where Professor Swengolly is about to leave. Jed informs the professor of his uncle's condition. The professor takes him out of his trance. Hezekiah, regaining his normal state of mind, and realizing that he is about to marry his wash lady, tells the professor that he has saved him from marrying "that," and rewards the professor by giving him ten cents. Everybody is flabbergasted and the weeping wash lady is left to her sorrow. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
