While she is so occupied, the editor arrives and displays with pride a new fire chief's hat. He has been made chief of the local department. A few days later while the brigade is practicing a bell is heard. Off they rush only to find they were fooled by the supper bell at the boarding house. Meanwhile a real fire alarm has been turned on for smoke is issuing from the chief's residence. Harold Highbrow, the Clarion reporter and Annie, terribly excited, don't meet with much success rescuing the editor's lovely daughter. Finally the hook and ladder company arrive. Their fire hose is so leaky that it's hard to tell whether the townspeople are witnessing a flood or a fire. But then it doesn't matter much for after all it was only roast chicken burning.
