Mary's Aunt Jessica arrives for the wedding and discovers her niece in the act of taking a drug. Mary confesses that she has become a victim and is unable to quit the habit. They decide that Mary should consult some physician in an effort to conquer the habit. Mary remembers that an old school friend is practicing medicine and they decide to consult him. Her decision is strengthened when she and Courtney meet a dope fiend and she notices the repugnance with which Courtney regards the fiend. Mary's aunt proposes she and Mary's friend Dr. Willis take her to a lonely place to try to break the dreaded habit; Mary consents. The aunt leaves and is kidnapped. Her father and Courtney exert every effort to locate her. Unwilling to risk notoriety, they secure the services of private detectives. Mary, meanwhile, responds to the treatment. Her father receives a note from her, stating that she is in good hands and begging them not to search for her. Courtney believes that this letter is merely a blind. Aunt Jessica develops a severe case of pneumonia and is compelled to leave the two and go to the city for treatment; she had planned to send a nurse, but when she gets to the city, she loses consciousness and is taken to a city hospital. Dr. Willis, not only a former schoolmate but a former sweetheart of Mary's, finds his old love returning, but manages to keep this from her. The two are forced to remain together, expecting the arrival of the nurse every day. When Mary's aunt regains consciousness several days later, she hurries a nurse forward with instructions to take care of Mary. The detectives, meanwhile, have located her. Courtney and the detectives arrive at the doctor's just at dinnertime. Courtney, peering through the window, sees Mary tying an apron around the doctor and the two acting like children. He enters and upbraids her for her unfaithfulness. She starts to explain, but remembering Courtney's hatred toward the dope fiend, refuses to give any explanation, but pleads with him to trust her for a while longer, but he denounces her and states that under the circumstances he wouldn't trust his own sister. The doctor pleads also with Courtney. Courtney leaves in a rage and Mary is very much broken up. The doctor tells her that for a whole week she has not taken any drug, and that he thinks she is strong enough to go home. Three weeks later Willis is much surprised by a visit from Mary and her aunt. Mary has broken her engagement with Courtney and the aunt has come to offer the doctor payment for his services. He refuses the money. The aunt begs him to come to the small town until informed that Mary is expecting to spend some time with her aunt and, turning to Mary, he sees that his presence would be greatly desired. The aunt smiles and realizes that in the future Mary will have the doctor to see that she never becomes addicted to the drug habit again. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
