Jim's pals come to get him to go on a big job, and Jim leaves in spite of the protests of Mary. The house that the crooks have picked out to rob is that of John Marmaduke, a wealthy bachelor. Jim is picked as the one to go inside to do the work. John is still up and hears the man enter. A struggle ensues and it ends as John kills Jim. The butler comes in and both men notice that there is a striking resemblance between John and the burglar. The bachelor decides to take the crook's place and to leave the body there to make it appear as if he has committed suicide. The butler swears secrecy so John puts on the other man's clothes and sallies forth. Jim's pals scamper as soon as they hear the shot but linger just outside the grounds. When John comes out they attack him to get the swag. Mary finds him bleeding and sore and leads him to her home. The next day Marmaduke goes to his own funeral and notices that his erstwhile fiancée is not at all grieved at his death. He resolves to keep his character as a crook. That evening at supper Mary is surprised at Jim's improved table manners but does not suspect anything until the next day when the butler comes to see his master. Mary denounces Marmaduke for the deceit he has played. In the meanwhile Jim's pals have found out that he is at Mary's house and they come to thrash him. Mary warns him but he says that he will not leave without her. But they have taken so long to argue that the thieves come and trap John. John succeeds in getting the best of one of the crooks but is having a hard time with the other when Buxton, the butler, whom John has sent for a real meal, arrives in time to save his master. Mary is rushed into a waiting auto and as the picture fades out the two are seen in the tonneau of the car embracing each other. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
