Hanson from police headquarters and several policemen hear the shot and hurry to the scene. Louis stands motionless and two gunmen, Pete and Red, rush past and take his gun. When Hanson comes up he finds Louis but no gun. They find no trace of the gun and are forced to let Louis go. Hanson sends a man to trail him. Discovering Herton's identity, trails him also. Pete and Red return to the room, leave Louis' gun and exit. They look furtively at the baby. Louis, realizing he is shadowed, doubles his tracks and loses his trailer, but Hanson picks him up and follows him to the tenement room which he enters by the fire escape. Louis returning finds his gun, hidden by Red and Pete. As he stands looking at it, Hanson enters and jumps him. The two struggle and Hanson puts the handcuffs on him. He turns and sees the baby lying on the bed and asks Louis whose it is. Louis smiles and says, "that's Mamie's kid, she was my wife." Hanson asks about it and Louis starts to tell. The scene changes; once more he and Mamie are young sweethearts. Louis takes her to an East Side racket. The manager of the dance hall cabaret sees her and offers her a position. With Louis' consent, she takes it. While she is singing and dancing, Dave Herton sees her and realizes her possibilities. A year later she is the hit of New York, but in spite of that she does not forget Louis. For one year he loses sight of her. One day he meets her on the street, wan and fatigued. He questions her and takes her home. She tells him she is about to become a mother and the father is Dave Herton, who discharged her. Louis' first thought is to kill Herton, but Mamie stops him. Louis marries her and gives the child a father. When the baby was born, Mamie died and left the child in Louis' care. The man's story ends and Hanson, overcome says he will let him go. He undoes the handcuffs and starts to leave. The police enter with Red and Pete. Louis sees them and makes a break for the window, but they stop him. The police say Red and Pete have confessed that Louis killed Herton and robbed him. Hanson turns on Louis, who laughs, because he fooled the inspector. Red's wife enters at that moment and snatches up her child. Hanson rushes Louis angrily off to jail. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
