He is fond of children and makes friends with her and gives her an old doll. Dot is the child of crook Bert Avery and his wife Nell, who disapproves of her husband's occupation and lives in constant fear of his arrest. Avery returns from making a haul, his pockets full of stolen money, but has to get out of town for fear of detection. He wishes to leave the stolen money with his wife, but she refuses to take it. He leaves her and flees the country. She drags on a life of hardship until her health, never too good, gives out and she dies. Finding her cold and motionless, the child goes to her old friend the toymaker, and when Hans realizes what has happened, he adopts Dot as his own. Soon after, he has a legacy left him. He leaves his work, invests his money, and goes to live in a little country place, where he prospers and everyone looks up to him. Avery returns to the country, and passing through he hears exaggerated rumors of Hans' wealth. He breaks into the house intent on robbery, and while trying to intimidate Hans he is brought face-to-face with his own child. He hears what Hans has done for her, repents, and vows to live a better life. He leaves Dot in Hans' care until he can prove himself more worthy of her.
