Andy's mother was a washerwoman. The rent was due and the agent had impolitely and firmly intimated that the family must either pay or get out. Andy was not a polite, well-mannered little boy who lay awake at night and wept because his dear mamma was in sorrow. Instead, Andy was something of a tough. He wanted to be a pugilist when he grew up and would not have cared at all to be a curate or anything of that sort. When he learned that the family needed money he decided to leave school and start in business. In consideration of Andy's exact attitude toward school his decision could hardly have been called entirely self-sacrificing. Andy first applied to the foreman of a large construction gang and learned that they were only in need of large and powerful men. Andy attempted to show the foreman that he was a large and powerful man, but without much success. A little later he tried to join a theatrical company, but failed to convince the stage director of his dramatic ability. Finally Andy went to a district messenger office and interviewed the manager. The manager offered to engage him, but when Andy asked for an advance of ten dollars, the manager curtly refused and poor Andy was in a quandary. It was half past four and unless he had ten dollars by five his mother would be thrown into the street. So he went out and sat on the curb dejectedly. While he sat there, the superintendent of the messenger office came out. As he passed Andy a pocketbook slipped out of his pocket. Andy picked it up. It was very fat and Andy caught a glimpse of large and beautiful yellow bills. For just half a minute he thought of rushing home with his find. Then he turned and ran for the man. That was the way that Andy got his job and an advance of ten dollars. He reached home just as the agent was piling the furniture in the street. Andy haughtily paid the tyrant and stalked into the welcoming arms of his proud family. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
