He is reputed to be extremely wealthy and when his niece and only relative questions him about it, he insists he is saving the money to further the Confederate cause. Helen goes to work as stenographer in the town hotel. Dislike of Herbert Carew, a guest, is a common bond between the girl and Tommy Lawrence, a likable young salesman, Carew wants the girl for the money the old man is supposed to possess. Lawrence wins her. Meanwhile, Carew has met and gained the confidence of the major. When the old man dies he finds the hiding place of the fortune. He vanishes with it.
