By clever maneuvering the girl got Flagg's gun away from him, and when he persisted in arresting Mrs. Watkins, Rose shot him; Rose's mother went to jail all right, but there Flagg's duty ended and rather than punish the girl he loved for her loyalty to her mother, Flagg freed her of all responsibility with the simple declaration to the police that he was wounded by an accidental shot.
