Evidence points to Lee Longstreet, Elsie's true love, and Beeman does not confess until Lee is tried, convicted, and sentenced to die. Then, in a heroic act, Beeman telegraphs his confession to the prison, thereby halting the execution. He saves Lee but loses his own life when he goes out in a storm to repair damaged lines.
