While attempting to avert a looming strike, Brooks Insall, one of the mill's major stockholders, meets Janet and the two fall in love. In the ensuing chaos of the strike, Ditmar is shot by Janet's deranged mother, and Janet is imprisoned for the crime. Insall exonerates her, replaces Ditmar as the mill's manager and rescues Elsie, whose shame had forced her into exile.
