Phyllis confides in the other school girls and learns that they are all inclined to he frolicsome if given the chance. She is chosen at once as their leader. The head professor of the Bleeding Heart Seminary, Silas Sniffles, and Mrs. Saxe are smitten on each other. Now Phyllis meets Sniffles for the first time and strange to say, her vivaciousness and smile make the old codger's heart flutter strangely. He compliments her quite highly upon her classwork. That night Phyllis, who has stolen the master key from Mrs. Saxe's desk, at a late hour unlocks all the doors to the girls' room and the crowd silently steal to the dormitory pantry and thence to Phyllis' room, where they proceed to have a jolly feed. Finally they hear the matron coming. Quick as a flash, the evidence is swept together and the girls hide under the bed. Phyllis feigns sleep. The irate matron, having heard suspicious sounds, enters Phyllis' room, but is surprised to find everything quiet and Phyllis fast asleep. Next morning, Tilly Francis, a book worm and teacher's pet, hears whispers of the night's frolic and tattles to Mrs. Saxe who locks all of the offenders in their rooms. Sniffles misses Phyllis from the class and inquires of Mrs. Saxe who recites to him the terrible actions of the young hoyden, but this only increases the old codger's heart palpitation and he suggests a milder punishment, which causes an argument and quarrel. Sniffles thinks it a good chance to break off his attentions to Mrs. Saxe. Mrs. Saxe relents at this turn of affairs and releases the culprits. That day in class Sniffles discovers that Phyllis is reading Robert W. Chamber's "The Common Law," behind her regular manual of instruction and takes it away from her, ordering her to remain after class. After the pupils are dismissed, Sniffles alone with Phyllis, urges her to be good. Phyllis pats him on the head and entices him with girlish fervor which drives the old codger nearly wild. Just as he tries to kiss her the door opens and in steps Mrs. Saxe. Noting the expression of innocence that Phyllis adopts, she suspects Sniffles of improper conduct. Ordering Sniffles to go, Mrs. Saxe turns upon Sniffles and gives him a terrible tongue lashing. Once out of Mrs. Saxe's sight, Phyllis calls the girls together and they plan revenge upon Tilly Francis. That night they stealthily break into her room and proceed to paint her face and sprinkle her with cold water. Then before the matron appears all scurry to their rooms and the matron, descending upon poor Tilly, hears her story but cannot believe it since all the doors to the girls' rooms are locked. She thinks the girl is mentally unbalanced and urges her to give up school for a while. The following day Phyllis, who is in Sniffles' class, pulls up her dress, exposing her knee. This gets the old teacher so excited that the session ends in a furor. On the pretext of giving Phyllis another "talking to" Sniffles keeps her in after the school hour. Phyllis, however, has apprised the other girls of the teacher's action and tells them to have the matron appear at the psychological moment, when she is showing Sniffles a hole in her stocking a little above the ankle. The teacher expresses sorrow and offers to buy a pair of silk hose, if she will keep quiet. The girls having been instructed by Phyllis, tell Mrs. Saxe of the scandalous proceeding. Being in love with Sniffles she is enraged to think that a young snip can distract his attentions from her. The only thing to do is to have her taken from the seminary, so a letter is penned to the spinster aunt telling her that nothing can be done with Phyllis. That afternoon Sniffles makes his way cautiously to the village store where he purchases a pair of silk hose for Phyllis. Phyllis' aunt arrives and storms into the seminary to learn of her niece's conduct. Mrs. Saxe determines to show the aunt for herself, so a close watch is kept upon Phyllis and Sniffles who appears to be elated over something. After class Phyllis is told to remain and excited Mrs. Saxe and the aunt watch from without to see Sniffles present Phyllis with a present. They are shocked still more when Phyllis throws a kiss at him and darts out of the room. Phyllis is quickly apprehended by Mrs. Saxe and led into the office where before her aunt, the matron unwraps the package, revealing the silk hosiery. The unoffending Sniffles faces the awful accusation and then wilts weakly. However. Sniffles has support for when auntie accuses the worthy scholar for trying to ruin the morals of her niece. Mrs. Saxe defends him hotly and declares that it was quite the reverse; that Phyllis was undermining the great man's principles. A hot argument takes place and a general free-for-all in which auntie and Phyllis escape. Auntie solemnly promises Phyllis with tears in her eyes that she will never again try to send her to school to discipline her and Phyllis winks slyly. Back in the seminary, poor Sniffles, his budding romance ruined, is forced to accept the amorous embraces of Mrs. Saxe, for upon her depends his position.
