A knock at the door announces Walter Coombs, a neighbor who insists on forcing his attentions on Delia's mother, Mrs. Trent. She tells him to leave at once. He goes away saying, "You'll be glad enough to get me yet. Just wait." Delia becomes dangerously ill and Dr. Faraday, a handsome middle-aged man, restores her to health. Naturally Delia and her mother like him, which Coombs resents. Dr. Faraday becomes very fond of Delia and she returns his affection. When her mother dies, she turns to him as her protector. Coombs plans to strike at the doctor through Delia by offering to adopt her as his ward, but the doctor claims her. Coombs tauntingly dares Faraday to decide the matter by a cut of the cards. At the village store the doctor wins the cut. He sends Delia to live at his Aunt Ellen's. Five years later, Dr. Faraday receives a letter from Delia begging him to visit them, and sending a picture of herself. She is now 17 and very beautiful and lovable. The doctor goes to his aunt's home; Coombs leaves by the same train, determined to have revenge. Delia shows the doctor that she cares for him, and he realizes that he loves her. His conscience makes him feel he is too old to marry the young girl and he determines to go away. Delia wanders into the moonlit garden and is accosted by Coombs, who hands her a letter allegedly from her father, who is said to be in hiding and wishes to see his daughter. She is about to go with Coombs when Faraday appears. Coombs draws a revolver and fires, hitting Delia, who falls in a swoon. Police take Coombs into custody. Delia recovers from her wound and proves to Faraday that no barrier can separate their love. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
