  • * Ian was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1951. A graduate of the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Ian became a graphic artist, most recently studying with Susan Sarbach. Paintings can be viewed at the link above. In 1970 started working with Richard Pochinko to develop a mask into clown program which has become known as Pochinko Mask Technique. Together they formed the Theatre Resource Centre in Ottawa and Toronto, collaborating on the creation of the clown Nion and a series of experimental works. As a multi-disciplinary theatre artist, he brings together elements of mask, clown, ritual ceremony, video and graphic arts. Started in professional theatre as a journeyman actor at the Stratford Festival in 1974 and continued to perform primarily in Toronto and Montreal for Theatre Hour Company, Nightwood, Native Earth, T.W.P., Tarragon, Factory, Theatre Centre, Buddies in Bad Times, Theatre Quatre-Sous, Passe Muraille, and the Citadel in Edmonton, playing such diverse characters as Jean Genet, Picasso, Hitler, Ezra Pound, Pythagoras, Osiris, Alfred Jarry's "Supermale", Madame Zaza in Dario Fo’s “Elizabeth”, Mr. Hardcastle in Goldsmith’s “She Stoops to Conquer”, Yves in “Head a Tete”, the title role in “American Demon” as well as "Nion" and numerous "Fools". Presently director of the West End Public Theatre. Since 1975 he has also led mask & clown workshops at the Mummers theatre in Newfoundland, Niagara-on-the-Lake Mime school, Da-Boj-A-Ma-Jig theatre on Manitoulin Island, Maggie Basset Studio, Toronto, Factory Theatre, Native Earth, York University, Memorial University, Newfoundland, as well as the Theatre Resource Centre. In Vancouver from 1994 to the present led clown/mask workshops at the Caravan Farm Theatre, Friends for Life, B.C. Persons With Aids, Workshops in the Performing Arts, Station Street Youth-theatre, Gastown Actor's Studio, Vancouver Film School, Youth on Purpose, Musqueam and Squamish teens, Theatre Terrific and the West End Public Theatre. He trained for film with Marushka Stankova at the National Film Board of Canada, and continues to work in film and television in Vancouver.
