Robert Clem is a native of Alabama who graduated from Harvard Law School
and was a Washington trial lawyer before turning to film and earning an
M.F.A. from NYU film school in 1982. His thesis film “A Vintage
Thunderbird,” adapted from a story by Ann Beattie, aired on A&E Network.
He was awarded an independent filmmaker fellowship by the American Film
Institute and invited in 1986 to the Sundance Institute Writer/Director’s
lab with his project Stray Kids. His first feature length film Big Jim
Folsom: The Two Faces of Populism explored Alabama’s racially diverse,
populist revolt in the 1940s and how George Wallace betrayed that cause.
The film won the Int’l Documentary Ass’n/ABCNewsVideoSource Award in 1997
and was aired on PBS and in Europe.

In 1990 Clem founded the nonprofit Foundation for New Media Inc., to
develop dramatic and documentary programming based on literary and
historical themes. Early radio projects aired on National Public Radio
include “Hamilton v. Burr: A Strange Case of Homicide,” with Eli Wallach
and Henderson Forsythe; “The Untouchable Dr. Wilson” with Jack Gilpin; the
five-part series Child of the Sun: The Expedition of Hernando de Soto,
with a cast of Hispanic and Native American actors; “The Inner Life of
Slavery” a program on early black author Charles Chesnutt and his story
“Dave’s Neckliss,” read by Ossie Davis; and the three-hour series, aired in
1997 on NPR and 55 countries worldwide, Centennial Faulkner, including
three radio dramas Clem wrote and directed with a cast including Jeffrey
Wright, David Strathairn, William Fichtner, Jeffrey De Munn, Stacy Keach,
Betty Buckley, Lois Smith, John Glover, Bill Raymond, Will Patton, Campbell
Scott, Hope Davis and Michael O’Keefe.

Through his company One State Films, in the early 2000s Clem produced and
directed two films related to war: War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator,
about three American World War I pilots known as the “three musketeers;”
and the feature drama Company K, based on the classic 1933 novel by William
March. Both films are being re-released in new 2K versions during the
centennial of World War I. Clem also wrote and directed the award-winning
In the Wake of the Assassins (2007), about an Alabama political
assassination that exacerbated the racial strife of the 1960s; Eugene
Walter: Last of the Bohemians (2008), also a festival award winner, about
the elfin Alabamian who was a central part of Fellini’s circle and the
American expatriate community in 1960s Rome; and The Jefferson County Sound
(2011) about how gospel music shaped the resistance of African Americans to
    racial restrictions in Birmingham, Alabama.

More recently Clem wrote and directed The Passion of Miss Augusta ,
dramatizing the life of early Southern Gothic writer Augusta Evans Wilson
and her blockbuster 1866 romantic novel St. Elmo; The Two Worlds of
William March, about the Alabama author whose stories and novels offer a
harsh and brutal critique of war and Southern society; and How They Got
Over, about the golden age of African American gospel quartet music and its
influence on early rock and roll.
