UPLOADED RESUME
  • * HUGH STODDART graduated from Oxford with a degree in law but went on to work
in the visual arts, finally as director of the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham,
whilst also writing and working on films. The first film from the writer-
director partnership he established with Colin Gregg was produced in 1978
and Hugh soon became a full-time screenwriter notably with the success of
TO THE LIGHTHOUSE (BBC, shortlisted for BAFTA Best Single Drama) and
REMEMBRANCE (theatrical release, C4, Grand Prize Taormina.)

Other films from that partnership include WE THINK THE WORLD OF YOU with
Alan Bates and Gary Oldman. It sold for 15 years in the U.S and was re-
released on DVD as one of six ˜forgotten classics" by Guerilla Films UK
    in 2011.

In 1992 Hugh's drama serial THE BIG BATTALIONS, with Brian Cox and Jane
Lapotaire, was on Channel Four. THE MILL ON THE FLOSS starring Emily Watson
was on BBC1 in 1997. In 2002 BBC-1 screened his Dalziel & Pascoe
adaptation DIALOGUES OF THE DEAD, repeated in 2005. In 2010 he co-directed
LIFETIME with Nichola Bruce; this short film has formed the basis for a
feature film currently in development in Ireland.

His play GIBRALTAR STRAIT was commissioned and staged by the Theatre
Upstairs and in 2009 he wrote a stage version of BARCHESTER TOWERS.

He has worked extensively as a tutor and lecturer on screenwriting, and has
held fellowships at East Anglia and Exeter; he is now an Honorary Fellow in
the Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Hugh worked in HMP Brixton as a writer 1999-2000 and was one of the
founders of NOT SHUT UP, a national magazine for art and creative writing
by prisoners. He was the managing editor for six years, until late 2012.
